Join us on Saturday, May 12th to celebrate Ride for Reading’s 10 year anniversary and as we wrap up National Ride for Reading week!
In 2008, Mathew Portell, had a small vision. As a public school educator, he learned there were many children who did not have books at home to read. In low-income communities, studies say that 1 in 300 children have access to age-appropriate books. As an avid cyclist, he decided to take his passion for cycling and combine it with a need to get books into children’s hands. 10 years ago, Ride for Reading was formed. Since then, Ride for Reading has mobilized over 13,000 volunteers, donated over 450,000 books, delivered to over 250 schools and had a presence in over 50 different cities across the country!
Our overall mission is to continue to promote literacy & healthy-living by delivering age-appropriate books to children at Title 1 Schools and in low-income communities by bicycle.
To help celebrate 10 wonderful years, we are joining with our friends and Sponsor, Von Elrod’s Beer & Sausage Garden, for a celebration! We will be highlighting photos and stories from our deliveries & fundraising events over the years, recognizing our Volunteers and key Sponsors & Partners, Schools and more! There will be live music, discounts on food & drinks & great giveaways! We know Summer can be a busy time of year so mark your calendars now. Time: TBD. MORE DETAILS TO COME!
In honor of 10 great years, we are also setting a goal to raise $10,000 in 10 days between May 2-12, beginning with The Big Payback on May 2nd. This goal will help us put more books into more children’s hands. (Do we think we can raise more? Well, yes!! And we’ll shoot for more!) Will you join us in supporting our mission and donate $25, $50…$1,000 and see what kind of a difference we can make when we all come together? You can make your generous donations HERE.
