Event Details

SAVE THE DATE for our October book delivery to Paragon Mills Elementary on Saturday, October 31st to celebrate National Book Month! We will meet at TBD at 12:00 p.m.

Due to the current circumstances we are in, we have had to make some adjustments to our regularly scheduled Book Deliveries. We are excited to still partner with Metro Nashville Public Schools to pass out books to children/families in a drive-through format. Addtionally, for this delivery we will be working together with Plaza Mariachi Music City, the Hispanic Family Foundation and the Metro Nashville Police Department for a Trunk-or-Treat and Family-friendly festival & drive-in movie night following the delivery. More details to come!

Registration will open soon – stay tuned!

Ride for Reading’s mission is to help children in low-income areas become healthy and literate. Since 2008, we have mobilized over 20,000 volunteers to deliver over 500,000 books to over 300 schools in over 50 cities across the U.S. Founded here locally in Nashville, we host 8-9 book deliveries during the school year, to Title 1 schools. Additionally, we have partnered with Community Centers and Summer School programs and other Literacy Partners during the summer months to distribute books. Ride for Reading believes that education is not only found within the four walls of a school building, but within the pages of a book you can go anywhere, see anything, and experience everything. Every child deserves that despite economic status.

VOLUNTEERS are the core of our mission and we couldn’t do what we do without the help of the community! Due to COVID-19, our Book Deliveries are going to look somewhat different but our goal is still to ensure that children have access to and are receiving books to build up their home libraries. We are also working to promote even more healthy initiatives for an overall mind and body wellness!

We are in the need of volunteer CYCLISTS and READERS on an ongoing basis. The book delivery will consist of a small gathering of volunteer cyclists meeting at a central location to load up books in backpacks, trailers, etc. and riding our bikes together as a group (parade-style) to the School and delivering books in a drive-through format. We will also have volunteers that will just be responsible for setting up at the School to pass out books.

We will be providing students/parents a Ride for Reading introduction letter ahead of the Delivery with a few tips on how to read with their children at home and to encourage them to get exercise throughout the day. Volunteers will have the opportunity to interact with the students and families as they are passing out books to vehicles! The delivery route will be no more than 2-5 miles and relatively flat. The delivery will last approximately 2-2.5 hours, so please plan accordingly. We understand many of you are sacrificing your lunches and personal time, so thank you in advance!

Please bring your own bike. All levels of cyclists welcome! If you do not have a bike, many local bike shops offer bike rentals. Please bring a backpack to carry your books in and everyone must wear a helmet (*at this time we will not be able to lend out spare helmets or backpacks for overall safety).

Unfortunately we will not be able to have volunteer readers for this event. We are still working on other opportunities for this so stay tuned. In the meantime, you may volunteer to read a book virtually that we can send directly to the Schools to share with the children. If you would like more information on how to do this, please contact brenda.mikec@rideforreading.org.

We are excited to share the love of reading & healthy-living with these children. We promise, this will still be a rewarding and fun event and opportunity to serve and bring smiles to these children that have had the hardest transition! So, get that bike ready, load up some books and join us for an experience you will never forget- and neither will the children you serve!  Invite your friends, family, co-workers & work teams, bike club members and someone you know that has never experienced a delivery before & join us to impact the lives of the children in Nashville.

Thank you all for volunteering your time with Ride for Reading!
