Event Details

SAVE THE DATE for our October book delivery with Paragon Mills Elementary on Saturday, October 31st from 12:00 – 2:30pm to celebrate National Book Month!

Due to the current circumstances we are in, we have had to make some adjustments to our regularly scheduled Book Deliveries. We are still partnering with Metro Nashville Public Schools to pass out books to children/families in a drive-through format.

Volunteers will meet at Paragon Mills to help pass out books to children/families to vehicles.  Additionally, we will be handing out food to families, courtesty of Second Harvest Food Bank. We will have Freewheelin’ Bicycle Repair Service, Ride615 Bicycle Shop & volunteers onsite to help with minor kids bike repairs. Music City Pet Partners and other volunteer readers will be reading to children (while bikes are being repaired). Walk/Bike Nashville will be onsite to talk about helmet fitting and overall bike safety. Finally, together we will host a short bike ride with children/families to Plaza Mariachi and back.

To add to the fun – we will be working together with Plaza Mariachi Music City, Hispanic Family Foundation, Metro Nashville Police Department and other partners for a Trunk-or-Treat and family-friendly festival following the book distribution. Learn more about this event HERE.

Volunteers will be needed throughout the day. *We encourage you to dress up as your favorite book character or in a child-friendly costume. This will be a great way to bring smiles to children and families during this time. In the consideration of overall safety, masks will be required.

Register to join us below. Thank you for volunteering to help promote healthy initiatives and literacy in your community!

Ride for Reading’s mission is to help children in low-income areas become healthy and literate. Since our start in  February 2008 in Nashville, TN, Ride for Reading has collected and delivered more than 500,000 books, mobilized  over 6,000 volunteers to ride their bikes, totaling over 10,000 miles. Over 400 hours have been dedicated to  reading to children in classrooms. Ride for Reading believes that education is not only found within the four walls of  a school building, but within the pages of a book you can go anywhere, see anything, and experience everything.  We also believe every child should have access to safe places to recreate and be provided opportunities to maintain  healthy lives, despite economic status.

VOLUNTEERS are the core of our mission and we couldn’t do what we do without the help of the community! Due to COVID-19, our Book Deliveries are going to look somewhat different but our goal is still to ensure that children have access to and are receiving books to build up their home libraries. We are also working to promote even more healthy initiatives for an overall mind and body wellness!

We are in the need of volunteers on an ongoing basis. Each book delivery will look different based on the School, Community Center or Partner(s) we are working with.

We will be providing students/parents a Ride for Reading introduction letter ahead of the Delivery with a few tips on how to read with their children at home and to encourage them to get exercise throughout the day. Volunteers will have the opportunity to interact with the students and families as they are passing out books, reading or helping with bike repairs. The delivery will last approximately 2-2.5 hours, so please plan accordingly. We understand many of you are sacrificing your lunches and personal time, so thank you in advance!

Please bring your own bike. All levels of cyclists welcome! If you do not have a bike, many local bike shops offer bike rentals. Please bring a backpack to carry your books in and everyone must wear a helmet (*at this time we will not be able to lend out spare helmets or backpacks for overall safety).

We are working on setting up a Reading Nook at some of our events and will look for Volunteers to read to a small group of children. For the time being, a reader must wear a mask while reading unless they are six feet apart.

We are excited to share the love of reading & healthy-living with these children. We promise, this will still be a rewarding and fun event and opportunity to serve and bring smiles to these children that have had the hardest transition! So, get that bike ready, load up some books and join us for an experience you will never forget- and neither will the children you serve!  Invite your friends, family, co-workers & work teams, bike club members and someone you know that has never experienced a delivery before & join us to impact the lives of the children in Nashville.

Thank you all for volunteering your time with Ride for Reading!
