Established in 2008 by dedicated and determined first year Nashville, Tennessee 4th grade teacher and avid cyclist Mathew Portell, Ride for Reading’s mission is to promote literacy and healthy living through the distribution of books via bicycle to children who aren’t fortunate enough to have their own. Today, Executive Director, Brenda Mikec, continues to fuel the passion with monthly Book Deliveries, Book Sorting and Teacher Book Pick-ups, Events and more! Ride for Reading has donated over 500,000 books to children of low-income families to date and continues to work towards supplying as many books as possible to boost reading skills among children. Ride for Reading is continually looking for volunteer cyclists, readers and Donors, Partners & Supporters.
Chapter: San Antonio
Since April 2016, Ride for Reading SA has delivered over 10,000 books via bicycle to children at eight Title I elementary schools across our community. In January 2017, Ride for Reading SA became the first official Chapter of Ride for Reading outside of Nashville, Tennessee. Through community support and amazing volunteers, Ride for Reading SA has continued to improve literacy and healthy living by delivering donated books via bicycle to six Title I elementary schools during the 2018-2019 school year.
